Big Wild at Red Rocks
We took a shuttle bus from the train station in Denver out of the city and up the mountain to the best outdoor venue I’ve ever seen.1 Of course, Red Rocks had been built up for me as a bucket-list venue, and it held up.
When Bill and Emily said they had booked the trip for the weekend, Marybeth and I nudged our way in. We’ve seen Big Wild a couple times before, but I knew the outdoor amphitheater was going to be his sweet spot.
The first opener was twen. They were fun young rock. The lead singer sat in our row for the main show and she seemed cool.
The second opener was Poolside, who I’ve started listening to this year. Great jamming rock cover songs and they connected with the audience.
The rows of seats are so steeply cut into the rock face that you feel a bit on edge getting around, but the effect during the show is that everyone has a great view and feels close to the stage.
Big Wild had a great trio of musicians with him, each with their own personal platform. They all wore matching red sweeping sweaters and had their own solos and the crowd loved every one.
He played his earlier album, which was absolutely the best choice. The crowd was moving the entire time and went wild with him as he joined the seats for the final song. We didn’t want it to end, I didn’t want to leave, and I’m looking forward to the next time.
