Television is a refracted window into the world. So Americans (television watchers) know of a great many things, but know about very little.

Television is inherently an audience-gathering mechanism. It doesn’t matter much what they are being gathered for, just that they can be advertised to as an audience.

How serious can any message on television be if it is immediately followed by a Calvin Klein commercial and preceded by a gas company commercial?
